Latest Mini Project
« on: August 30, 2010, 04:35:29 PM »
Hi To All,
Here are some pictures of a gear leaver and linkage that I have just finished.
I stripped all the old chrome off by dipping in Hydrochloric Acid (brick cleaner) and then used various scotch & abrasive dollies on a hand drill to polish up the stripped metal. I am pleased with the lever part as there were some deep marks that were got rid of !!

I then re Zinced the prepared parts, followed by another light polish and then fitted new rubber. I think that the lever has come up rather well  :D, I know that the zinc won't be as hard wearing as chrome but re chroming is getting expensive and I can always Re Zinc when it wears through.

Best get some clear lacquer on it before it dulls.

When I got some plating done , I went to a local firm on a nearby industrial estate. Some of the smaller firms will do them quite cheaply via the back door so long as you don't mind waiting so that they can batch them up with commercial jobs.

Do make detailed lists/photos/drawings so that things don't go missing

Where you save the money is doing the stripping/de-rusting and polishing yourself.

Regards
Dave

Very Nice!

I had some luck spraying mine with chrome paint- yes, there is such a product- and then lacquering it afterwards. I did the same on my forks- except I used EHT type lacquer- which reacted with the chrome paint and went a strange silver colour.

I think the normal lacquer should suffice for a bit and was relatively cheap with the paint.

Rgds

Hi Dave,

Good Idea about the lacquer, it's funny how you can over look the obvious  ::)

I did my engine with the EHT laquer- on top of EHT engine paint- and I can still smell it cooking after 100 miles use..
