MOT
« on: September 27, 2010, 08:54:52 AM »
My bike just flew through another MOT.  I was very glad to discover that the Laser exhaust pipe was not even commented upon, so it can't be as loud as I had feared.

I have only ever known one MoT testing staion to insist on taking the bike for a ride around the block, which was when he could check to see if the pipe was too loud.

When I took my bike there for an MoT I insisted they show me the regs that stipulated that the bike had to be ridden as part of the test...to which they had no answer. There was noooo way I was going to let anyone ride my bike.

If ever anyone is stopped by the plod for having a noisey exhaust, you can insist on a test being carried out at a MoT testing station at a date & time stipulated by you. If there's no markings like 'Not for Road Use' stamped on the exhaust, plod arn't MoT testers, & as a noise test isn't part of the MoT test, plod can do nothing.
Bikes...they're in the blood.

Unfortunately noise now IS part of the MOT but its a subjective test as it sez "Must be as quiet as a standard machine with factory exhaust system" or some such, wish i still had my Yam SR500 which was registered from new as a "Dunstall Yamaha" waking the dead wasn't in it.

For a while some time back the book said that if not factory exhaust it had to be to British Standard and quoted the BS number, really upset the bloke whose incredibly noisy bike i failed when i pointed out that the BS number on his exhaust was for the chrome plating not the noise!!---didnt help it also said not for highway use on it

Happily, BS numbers no longer apply.  All it says on the Laser is CB500/550.

I thought they could take it for a ride if there was any uncertainty about it's safety... Maybe if they thought bearings were on the way out, or brakes suspect.?
