wiring help required
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:54:23 PM »
Hi all ive done a search and found loads of wiring diagrams but non to suit my bike, its a 400/4 but the starter solanoid isnt earthed and has 2 bullet wires and 2 on a block connector it also has a small plug in item ( only way to describe it ) that is connected to green/red and blue/red ( i think ). im doing a striped down racer and i have removed all the wires not needed so all i have left would be the starter system/regulator/fuse box the lights front and rear, brake light and feeds for the coils, i have got it so it winds over on the starter with feed going to the coils so nearly there just need to know what the plug in thing is? and the green/? bullet wire from the starter solonoid where does that go?? many thanks jonny

The standard starter solenoid should have just two wires that connect to the wiring loom, as well as the two heavy duty connectors that take the current from the battery to turn the starter motor over. It does sound as though you have a differant solenoid to standard...in fact one that I have from a Honda CBR1000FH. This one has either a diode or a fuse on the side of it...forgive me as I havn't seen the item for a while, so I am working from memory. If it's a diode, this is there to stop any back EMF from affecting other components...this EMF emanating from any component that has a coil, like a solenoid.

So, if you were to put +12vdc onto one wire, & earth/chassis on the other wire, you should get a circuit between the two heavy duty connectors.

sorry for being a bit vague had another look today the small plug in item has 2 wires into it one is light blue/red stripe and is joined into the oil pressure switch wire the other is green/ red stripe and is joined into a wire that goes to the solanoid and also the clutch switch on the lever, also the solanoid had 2 heavy duty wires  connected to the regulator and battery ( i think this is the charging wire going back to the battery via the heavy duty cable) the plug in item has     s3h-02    and   + +<- -  if that makes any sense??? kind regards jonny

The part with <+ on it is definitely a diode. The < points towards the cathode & the + shows which way it would be connected into circuit. The original solenoid dosn't have a diode on it, & the diode is more than likely only able to be put into one position only so's not to be able to damage the circuitry.

I would test the solenoid by using a battery as I stated before. The big heavy duty connectors will have the battery charge circuit onto one tower, the other tower going to the starter motor. The towers arn't polarity relevant.
