SOHC specialists
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:17:29 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know of any reputable sohc specialists in the north west of England? I think my CB500 motor is generally pretty tired with low compression and the proverbial notchy gearbox which once warmed up doesn't like going from 1st to 2nd. I'm considering a full engine and gearbox restoration/rebuild. Phil Denton is a couple of hours away in north Wales, I've seen his adverts in the classic bike magazines. Is there anyone else in the Liverpool/Preston north west region?

I found that when I took apart my original engine, it was so worn out, it was too expensive to buy all the parts to do the rebuild.  It needed a rebore, new pistons and rings, new main bearings, big ends and possibly con-rods.  It also needed a new camshaft and followers, an oil pump, cam chain and tensioners and work on the cylinder head to fix the bearing surfaces where the camshaft runs.  The only serviceable parts left were the crankcases etc.  In the end I picked up a second hand low mileage engine from an american import bike for

A lot of gearbox parts are now unobtainable so a second motor is probably the easiest way to go

...or DK can be worth a try.  They guaranteed my engine had only done 7000 miles.  I was skeptical to begin with, but when it arrived and I partly dismantled it, I was very pleased;  It was clearly almost new.

Yeh, I know it will be an expensive job but I'm hoping if I get the job done by a reputable professional it will last me many years of happy riding.

I used to live in NW and still have relatives round Tupps Arse, or Ramsbottom to all the Southerners. I am only 2-3 hours down the M5 but like i said its the gearbox bits that aint easy. You bring it i will strip and check it and give you a list of parts needing replacement/repair and fit what you can obtain/afford
