Mileage?
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:23:28 AM »
Obviously the miles you can get out of a 750 motor depends on an awful lot, and I suspect most are trashed or even rebuilt before the max has been reached but was having a chat the other day on this topic and know of a CB5004 with 80,000 miles so far on original unrebuilt motor, just a little survey for interest, what the highest miles anyone out there has got ( or got so far ) from an unrebuilt 750?

I got about 80k from my F2 engine before its 1st rebuild, it has about 110k on it now and needs the head sorting again, which will get done once i finish the F2 aim doing up now so a few more years yet. this engine aim doing now has 28k on it.

My VT500 my 1st one i got over 150k on it before i need to do any thing and that was Cu's i had used poor unlead fuel in it and it burnt out the ex valves this was back when unlead 1st came out, this happen a few times, then a mate that worked for esso on the fuel test program told me they had the same problem with that fuel all so and said use a different make and from then on ok, it had over 250k on the clock when it got written off in a hit and run crash i had in 93 i was a dispatch rider in London at the time had been for 5 years
so clocked up a few miles on a few bikes.
Passed Bikes
CB 250 G5
CB 550 K3
CX 500 B2

My '69 sandcast is at 116,000 now (94,000 of them are mine). Cam chain, primary chain, and tensioners were changed at 32,000 when the head gasket needed doing. Every other major part is factory still (pistons, rings, valves, crank shells, clutch plates, etc. It is not the quietest CB750 motor on the planet, but does not burn oil still (not like my F2!) and goes great. Even the rear wheel sprocket is original still, with negligible wear showing (I do fit a new drive chain every time the rear tyre is changed though, and of course it has never seen UK winter weather).
There is an F1 in the Uk with over 150,000 miles up now; no idea what work if any has been necessary.

I also have a 400/4 I used daily throughout the 80's which reached 108,000, again without any major work. Still ran good, but due to winter use evrthing that could rot away did, so I stopped using it and restored that one.

Wow Chris your sancast is legendry, proof of the quality of the early Hondas,
The most mileage i have done was on my gpz550, i did over 60,000 with no engine work, not even valve shimming, only oil, and filters and exhaust, i have to many bikes to rack up any serious milage on any particular one
