« on: February 08, 2011, 06:40:30 PM »
Hi can anyone tell me, where the breather tube from the breather cover goes to? and where the two outlets on the bottom of the air filter box and the outlet on the air manifold?

thanks

Bastard. Carbs are the later PD type that were on K3.

I concur that the carbs are wrong for the bike, which means that the air box and rubbers are not original so its very difficult to be sure of where anything goes!

The pipe from the top of the engine ought to go to a connector under the air filter box to re-circ the oil vapour.

The pipe on the plenum chamber (where the rubbers fit) does not go anywhere BUT it isnt an ordinary pipe either, from memory it lets fuel overflow out but isnt supposed to let dirty air in

The K3 carbs ran much leaner (55mpg vs 40mpg for the other 500/550s I owned). Downside was that it would overheat very quickly in the summer if run at a standstill (like in the queue at Silverstone for example...  :-[)

thanks SteveD and Bryanj the pipe info makes perfect sense now. So the answer is not to sit still for to long in the next swelter of a summer that we are bound to get. Ha Ha

I can verify the overheating thing on the 550k3 carbs, have them on my 500/4 sidecar outfit for the economy but the trade off is the cold starts / stale fuel means the maintenence is higher. I think the 500 got better than 40mpg with standard carbs but re jetted (presumably) for a k&N filter and aftermarket pipes.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
