more help please
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:23:05 PM »
sorry but i have another couple of problems that i hope you can help me with please

1. when i squeeze the front brake the lever is extremely soft, so i thought no probs it just needs bleeding - now here's the problem, as i was bleeding the system i noticed that the wheel was moving does this meen that the wheel bearings are shot

and number 2 is I eventually got the bike running and when i put my hand on the exhaust downpipes i noticed that only 2 of the pipes are getting hot. Now initially i thought that it was one of the coils but then realised that it couldn't be as it was 2 pipes that were adjacent to each other

Now i have replaced the spark plugs, HT leads, and checked the carbs and dont know what else to do

Please help

cheers

With the front brake, is the caliper set correctly? It is a floating unit that operates from one side with a pivot to apply the second side. Possibly a seized pivot, Do both sides move when you apply the brake?
As for the engine, which two pots are not working? The carbs are fed in pairs via two petrol pipes. Are these flowing fuel to all the carbs?.
A good place to start

With the brake caliper, If you undo the two bolts holding the caliper together and move the parts out of the way then you should be able to move the arm easily with your fingers on it's locating pivot that's still bolted to the fork. If this is not possible you'll have to free this for the brake to work properley.

If it's siezed too close to the wheel it'll have the effect you've felt in that it pushes the piston too far back into the caliper when released so that too much lever stroke is used to move it into a braking position. It'll also bind when running unused probably.

a1 advice thank you - it was exactly what you had described

with the other fault it appears that somebody broke into my garage and undid the 2 jubilee clips that hold the carbs to the engine  :-[ ;D :-[

Nice one and good you've got sorted.

It's surprising how much effect that brake pivot has if sticking, I think the brake is not bad at all for that era if working correctly.

Also if not binding it makes the throttle work better too!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha Ha.

sorry i'm back again with another question, but a simple one hopefully  ;D

i'm still trying to sort out the running probs with my carbs and i think it will all be sorted now as ive ordered a new set of carb to head rubbers

but my question today is what does everyone use to hold the rubbers on because i think jubilee clips are too harsh for this job

cheers once again

You need the proper Honda clips as they are narrower than Jubilee, which is why the Jubilee ones dont work well, problem is the clips ain't cheap and dont even come with the screw which has to be ordered seperately so people think oh it dont matter i'll use cheaper jubilee clips but due to the width they dont tighten properly and distort the rubber

Well there you go, Spitfire got there first and DS includes the screw, but you are still looking at

I've got a set that I bought on eBay years ago.

I'll go and see if I can still find them.

take the plugs out of cylinders 3 and 4 and put a bit of fuel down the plug holes, put the plugs back in and see if she fires on those cylinders when you crank it over..if she does, you still have carb issues....sooty plugs are a sign of over rich mixture---- too little air..
try that and report back....
