I returned a ratchet spanner to Halfords today and they refused to replace it. The reason was because the lifetime warranty does not cover the moving parts.

Looks like they only guarantee the handle.

Bear this in mind if you buy any of these tools

I'd have a word with your local Trading Standards office. Look's to be a 'jobsworth' decision.
I had a similar problem with a retailer who refused to honour a pledge with money-off vouchers. An email to the manufacturer soon brought them into line.
