I have used helicoil insert kits on several bikes and they work a treat, like you say if you can get access to the area then mask everything off and also have a vacume cleaner ready to suck up the swarf and bits
There are other brands of insert which i think i remember Bryanj mentioning which are supposed to be even better than the helicoil
I bought a cheap kit on ebay which had everthing i needed to do the job

I bought a silverline (I think) kit for 6mm off ebay and it had everything needed, worked great and decent quality---about

My concern is just the drilling - clearly the hole I drill needs to be straight / square otherwise the insert will be wonky....so it's just a case of having a steady hand and a steady eye whilst drilling?

Mentioned TimeSert kits do come with special drillbits with a guidance shaft on the tip...
Quite fancy but pricey too...  ???
