CB550f play in Clutch basket
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:48:23 AM »
Help please,CB 550f 1975 (US spec)
Needed to change clutch,no problem, new friction plates sourced, end float checked and bought in line via new shim. However on inspecting the basket as per the manual for tight rivets I find that whilst the rivets are tight ,the large drive gear on the rear that is sandwiched between a plate and the basket and held by the rivets has a small amout of movement,in fact it floats very slightly, this is noticable when assembled on the shaft and the gear is engaged with the pinion as a slight rocking motion of the basket and visible at the interface between the gear and basket.I have check tightened the rivets and they are sound.
My question therefore is,is this float/play normal or do I have a problem?
The word from forums vast experience is anticipated and welcomed
Cheers
Stuart

Never checked one and never known one fail either so can' be definitive as eventually one of everything will break somewhere sometime(McGinty's second law) but i would put it back and see if there is a problem afterwards
