Hello from Essex
« on: October 12, 2012, 06:21:46 PM »
Hi chaps, finally got round to posting. :)

Purchased a cb500K1 just over 3 weeks ago with the plan of cafe racering it.
The bikes a bit of a rust bucket at the moment although it all looks cosmetic, this is due to being stood for 10 years.
The engine is free but a none runner due to carbs being full of crap and it needs a battery.

Well I'll save him asking :)
Frame cb50002087806
Engine cb500e2174379

Just did a bit of checking and from what I can see the frame is K1 and engine is K2 but correct me if I'm wrong.

The reason i said it was K1 was just because of the date of manufacture,I hadn't actually checked.

Thats a K2 from 7th or 8th month 1972, ther should be a month/year on the frame plate on the RH side of the headstock if you can confirm!

Thanks for clearing that up,always helps to now what you own. ::)
I'm presuming this the plate you refer to DGM15745OM.It was on the head stock it was stuck under the seat as the fixings had rusted through. :'(

The fact that its tax exempt was one of the reasons I purchased this particular bike, the V5 says the taxation class is historic

I've finally got a weekend free so in to the garage to give her some attention.

The plate from the frame should look like this item from ebay

Theres only 2 plates on the bike that I can see.
The first is this one that I mentioned earlier, that was taped under the seat.I would say that is the one for the headstock because the fixing holes line up and if it was any bigger it would cover the frame number.

The second is on the rear subframe on the right hand side.

The second one is the one Bryan was asking about, but it looks the same as the one on my F1 CB750 original uk bike the American bikes had a diferent Vin plate again that showed the manufacture dates, i'll try and find a photo of an example, also they were either on the headstock or front frame down tube, ;) Mick.

The vin plate on the headstock should be on the RH side as you sit on the bile with the stamped in number on the LH side.

The one you have on the rear subframe looks like a replacement as most origianls had raised numbers stamped from the rear not inlet stamped from the front, although Micks F1 one is stamped in. I suspect it is not an original US markey bike

The number stamped into the headstock on mine is on the right side as you sit on it as is the 2 rivet holes for the plate.
I've marked the rivets holes with some red paint to make them clearer.

I've been all over the bike and there are no other plates(apart from the subframe) or signs that there ever has been including the positions that you've shown to check.
Shes down to just a rolling chassis with the engine in so I can see all the frame.

I'm sorry to say that there is something odd about that bike, i have never seen a vin number on a 500 on the RH side of the headstock, the letters don't look right and unless my eyes decieve me the numbers are not in a straight line.

Now none of this is a problem if a new frame was fitted at some time as they come without numbers and you stamp in the ones from the old frame, I would be inspecting the LH side of the headstock for signs of grinding and/or filing to see if a number had been removed.

Having said all that you have a V5(hopefully) and its registered as an import so anything that happened was probably overseas
