countershaft bearing?
« on: October 19, 2012, 04:00:42 PM »
Hello all.
Wow this rebuild is becoming time consuming but i'm still enjoying it.    Just found the countershaft bearing isn't looking to good and needs replacing so a quick call to david silver and i've drawn a blank.   Been online "cmsnl" who are showing this part is also unavailable.  Would anyone know where i might be able to find this part in order to continue my engine rebuild?

Thanks in advance.  jimbo

OK both shafts have a bearing on each end, so which one is it?

The shaft is the countershaft which has the spline for the final drive sprocket.  The bearing is refered to in the haynes manual as number 22 "ball journal bearing".
O/D 57mm  I/D 25mm.    Hope this identifies the part well enough.

i have been onto the cmsnl site and located the part through the "search model" section.  I selected my bike honda cb550 f1 uk 1976 and went through to the  transmition diagrams in order to find my part.    The part i require is number 34 on the diagram or part number 91002-283-000.  This part is no longer available on the website.  Is the part you have selected going to be the same part?   How did you come to that part number?   Thanks for you help and advice..

Try Westernhills honda in the USA, but send an email asking if they have it as the website gives a price for everything.

If you are willing to get used its the same bearing on all the 450/500 twins and the 500/550 fours

mmmm thats interesting.  I was relying on cmsnl to give me the correct part number.  If someone else could confirm this then i will go ahead and order the part.  Thanks for the very usefull info oddjob,  no wonder i was having problems finding the parts if the part number was wrong.

91002 is the bearing behind the clutch, 91001 the bearing behind the sprocket, dont forget the "O" ring that goes on before the bearing.

If you can't get a bearing try for 23220-374-000 which is the shaft complete with bearing and "O" ring-----On second thoughts it would be cheaper to get a groove ground into a standard bearing as Dave Silver sez the shaft is £190

try here http://www.hondarestoration.com/index.htm as they show stock on some of these part numbers, the shaft Bryan mentioned is priced at $134.80 but there will be customs charges on top, the bearing 91002 286 008 is listed at $41.58. I have used this company and was pleased with the service.
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

well that was confusing.  I've finally ordered a part from cmsnl and i hope it's the correct part but i'm still not totally sure what i've ordered.   Thank you to everyone who has helped with this topic and hopefully i'll soon be starting the rebuild.

The difference in numbers is that the clutch bearing is an HS which means rated for higher rpm, so in theory that one, if the groove is the same and the bearing number in the book is correct, would do for both.

Jimbo, can you look closely at both of the bearings and see if the numbers on them are the same?

Those numbers came from an original japanese parts book I aquired, which is the only one i have seen for the 500 that does not have the missprint saying you need 2 centre selector forks!!

I'll have a look this evening for and numbers on the bearing. I think the one behind the clutch is a slightly different size but I'll have a measure.

As i said above the one that goes behind the clutch is rated for higher RPM, that is the difference. In standard bearings they used to be rated C1; C2; C3 for different speed but i can't remember which way it was!!

Its to do with the manufacturing tolerances of the balls and tracks mate but again i can't remember wether its tighter or looser for higher speed!! (I know mine tighten up at high speed!!).

Used to fit some 'kin big expensive ones to 85 horse 3 phase motors on board tankers
