Paint
« on: November 18, 2012, 07:02:23 PM »
I know this is probably a long shot, but does anyone know if there is a paint available spray or touch up that matches the Candy Saphire Blue on my 1976 CB550f.
Cheers.
Dave.

if you have a paint code then halfords will do a paint match either spray or touch up pen.  I've used a spray can and had a very good match.

Halfords cannot match the Honda candy paints, I've tried, and it just looks wrong! :'(
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

I guess you were lucky there...

AFAIK is Honda using 3-layer candy coats:

- primer/ground/base: silver, light gray
- main coat: tinted, half transparent metallic
- lacquer/finish: again tinted, transparent finish

crucial are degree/shade of tinting, as well as size, colour, proper mix (silver & golden) and finally the density/percentage of the metallic flakes...

Nearly impossible to find a body shop willing/able to try mixing the ingredients for the ST1100 color coats... and if one tried the result looked weird at the end, especially in brought daylight (like hibiscus/marshmallow candy...  ??? )
So I always ended up buying a new, factory colored fairing part...

Not to imagine finding the proper mixtures for a vintage motorcycle...

I used RS Paints to buy the flake sunrise orange for my bike. The finished result was very good but my friend who painted the tank and side panels said he could have mixed the paint if I'd given him the paint code

These days you take your car into the body shop, they open the door and on the pillar there is a sticker with the colour code. Bloke says hold on a minute and mixes it there and then. Japanese bikes of the 70s - not so much: http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/notes1.html

Here is a list but the codes don't mean anything to anyone I'm sure:
http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPaintCodes.htm

also from the above site: http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/lubrtech.html

Hence rsbikepaint (no affiliation blah blah) have a business.

Hi Guys,
When I wanted my bike resprayed in my local sprayers they had a computer with all makes and colours. He asked me what the Honda colour was called I said candy gold and sure enough the mixing of it popped up.I do not remember if a code came up but as you can see from my bike in the gallery I am way happy looks spot on.Why don't the paint shops have the same software in the UK?He also gave me a pot for touch up.
All the best
