CB750 ss cylinder head tightening
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:23:31 PM »
Hi Guys
Has anyone out there had any problems tightening the cylinder head nuts, are the studs prone to snapping or do the stretch, I notice they do sell them at David Silver so are they something that should be changed after taking the engine apart or is it OK to use the old ones. Any info would be gratefully received
Regards

I am now of the opinion that it is wise to do this while engine is apart,as the cost is not much, and the benefits are all good, i have lost count on the amount of oil leak from head gasket posts there are, it seems quite a common thing so, i now change the studs for the ape ones, and  also re-surface the head and barrels just tom be safe, you can also toque these heavy duty ones down a bit tighter

Hi UK Pete
I have had the head skimmed but not the barrels, the problem I'm having is that the head bolts feel very tight and are nowhere near the correct torque (about 10lbs). Should I tighten them down gradually or just go for it and tighten them to the required torque as soon as they start getting tight

I tighten them gradually in the correct sequence , so i go round and nip them up, then round again, just under the torque, then a final tighten down to the correct torque, not sure if that is correct but it is something i have always done and , i never seem to get problems

Does the manual give the torque values with dry or oiled threads?

Hi All
Well I tightened the head down gradually to the correct torque, put the engine back in the frame when I was ready to start it switched the ignition on and guess what. It only started first kick yippee
