help identifying loom
« on: January 21, 2013, 03:26:40 PM »
I seem to have hit a bit of a snag.
A couple of weeks ago I ordered a new main loom from dss and it arrived today so I thought I had better check to make sure its right.
I seem to be missing 8 wires at the fuse box end.6 are for the fuse holder and 2 are for small black box at the bottom right corner(not sure what this is,diode maybe?)
So my question is what is the general consensus. Is the loom correct for the model even though I'm 8 wires short and the one on the bike is wrong as is the electrical block.

I've been through the parts, workshop and delivery manuals and can't come up with an answer and it doesn't show the small black box.
I never got the bike running before I started stripping it even though that was the original plan so I can't rule out whether it was correct or not. There are a lot of home done crimps on the bike so it has been tinkered with, any help would be appreciated.

I've had a look at the looms on the dss site and the one for the 550 seems to have more wires and an extra plug, the fuse box plug on my loom has gone and just been crimped

The K2 loom is slightly different, I think the K1 just has a single fuse where as the K2 has three. The switchgear is different and the clutch lever has a safety switch.  I think the loom does resemble the 550 but don't know if it's the same.

No the rectifier and regulator where there I've taken them off and will replace with a modern rectifier.
There's 2 wires to the box green/red and grey/red.
The 6 wire connector to the fuse block is only missing because it's has been re crimped with straight joiners.
I took the loom of the bike a few weeks ago and every wire was connected to something there was no spares.

I don't know if your loom has been messed about with that much. My K2 has original switchgear which is different to the K1. The clutch lever does have a clutch switch and the bike also has an indicator warning buzzer.

The position of the ignition barrel is under the tank so the loom fitted ok if its the 550.
Regarding the diode there isn't a switch on the clutch lever from memory.
To be honest I'm not to worried what I fit to the bike as long as it's got the correct number of wires and plugs to marry up to whats on the bike.

Right I think I'm with you,I've got a 550 loom and a 500 subharness.
This may answer a question why I couldn't get power to a lot of the bike. When you turned the key all 3 fuses where live but that was it none of the lights worked.
What I can't get my head around though is if I've got the right loom now and the right sub harness why is there no connections for the fuse block and diode?
This the loom that's on the bike

The sub harness with the crimped wires to the fuse block.

The new 500 harness

And yes I know the kitchen isn't the place for bike parts. ;D

No you have a 500 loom and a 550 sub harness and without a mass of work ther is no way to get them to connect to each other mate. If you can get a 500 sub loom it should fit on the same steel bracket

Why is the new 500 loom pictured 8 wires short compared to the original?

That'll probably be 6 for the 3 fused cicuits, and 2 for the clutch switch diode ???
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Because the original is also a 550 loom not a 500

I've reread all the posts again and I think I've got my head around it. :o

I think I miss read one of the original posts. So The old originals I have are 550 loom and 550 sub harness so the new 500 loom will have to be returned for a 550 loom.
I'll see if I can repair the sub harness as I think one of the connectors is burnt out,if not I'll get a replacement.

Feel free to correct me if I'm still wrong.

ODDJOB Only the 550 K3 had the ignition by the clocks, the US Ko,1,2 had the same set up as the 500 and that is what i think we are seeing here

Jesus how hard can a bit of wiring be.
Let me clarify some points,
The bike is a US import.I will be replacing the switch gear on the bars so as long as the correct amount of wires are there I'm not worried if they don't plug straight in to the switches but I don't want to be messing with the wiring at the sub harness.Yes the bike has the ignition switch under the tank and yje idiot lights on the bar clamp.

I would like to retain the 3 fuses set up,If I order a 550 loom will this work?

Hi Mitch,

I don't know if this helps any but these are a few of pictures from my bike. My switch gear was looking a bit tired so I bought a new set from Dave Silver, the part numbers are on the boxes. The old controls are on top. It was a straightforward swop, the switch gear buttons were identical but I think a couple of wires were a different colour and I there wasn't a wire for the indicator buzzer.

I think Bryan is saying the 550K0, 550K1 and 550K2 had the ignition key below the tank, from then the 550K3 and the 550F etc had the ignition between the clocks. The 500K2 seems to share a number of parts with the 550, like the larger clocks and little things like the top yoke bolts which clamp to the fork leg which are the larger 550 size.
