cam chain renewal

  what kind of job is replacing the cam chain on my 77 cb400? big job ? and cn it be done with engine in frame.

Cam chain only can be replaced with a riveted chain with engine in frame BUT invariably the tensioner mechanism needs some work and that is an engine out bottom case off job

Do you know if the pattern tensioners address the weeknesses of original Honda part / design?

I don't know mate but I believe they are made from stainless which, being harder, should resist the cam chain battering which caused the pivot pin to go tight on the original and thus stop the horseshoe moving properly. I seen to remember that it was ttr400(Kevin) that was making them and as he races the 400 it should be ok.
