Hi all
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:54:59 AM »
Hi all. Firstly big thank you to SteveD for directing me from the USA forum!

I live in Scunthorpe north Lincolnshire
I'v been riding bikes all my life. I have a k8 hayabusa done a bit of work on it Nearly at 200Bhp
I'v been looking for a project bike for abount 2 years now. If I'm honest I really really want to build a norton comando! But can't afford it.
So I started looking at other things.

I have just got my self a 1980 CB650z it was a non runner, engine was out and been sat In a garage for 15 years got it for £200

So glad I found this forum think I would really struggle without all this info.

I am making it a cafe racer so got lots of original parts if any one is interested.

I really want a set of spoked wheels for it but not sure what other wheels would fit?

Any help really appreciated.

Thing I'm really struggling with us finding wheels. Really want spoked but it appears you can only get spoked wheels with single disk.

On 550s and 750s there have been many conversions to dual disk on spoked wheels, if you search for these you might find some useful info.

The 650 as the final mid size SOHC has several changes to the older 500/550 and whilst some bits fit others are no where near and difficult to get. The earlier fours you can simply reverse a caliper to get twin discs but not sure about yours as i think they are handed.

A great online resource is :-

http://www.motogrid.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=HOM

Where you can look up part numbers and also see which other Honda's they were fitted too.

Front spoked wheel should be relatively easy if you can get spacers made but not sure about the back.

All the best with your project

I have a 550 that came with 650 wheels fitted, personally I think they looked quite good, but since the spoked ones slotted back in so easily I'm pretty sure that wheels can be swapped around fairly easily between 500/ 550/ 650 bikes with the only tricky bits being you need to keep things like the brake back plates together and there may be issues setting up the disk alighnment and speedo drive but I think most of these are detailed in normal twin disking of  500 /550 threads on this forum. That's before you start looking at spacers to fit more common wheels from other machines. The old spoked wheels can suffer from cracked brake hub linings in the rear wheels which is something to look out for if buying - it's fixable using a lathe and there is at least 1 engineer offering this service proffesionally.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
