CB400F Tyres - Recommendations please?
« on: June 23, 2013, 04:42:18 AM »
Hi all,

Thoughts on best tyres for my restoration... the bike on correct rims etc. Realise a lot of potential answers here, but as anticipate only very low mileages am not concerned in saving pennies in pursuit of low wear. Also, despite wanting the bike 'original' as possible, safety / capability of the tyre must rank higher as I'm adverse to falling off!

Back in the 70's I used the Avon RoadRunners.... but am well behind the times now & so seek help.

If giving advice can you suggest a good source, ebay or otherwise if you know of one.....

Cheers,
Lobo.

For correct "period" look and good handling you can get Metzeler perfect me77 rear and perfect me11 front. you can look at them here

The modern Roadrunners maintain the old tread pattern but use modern compounds. Best of both worlds?

Avon taken over by Cooper from the USA and now they are owned by the Chinese (?) Indians (?)

Are tt100s still around?I looked on your link and all I could see was roadriders not roadrunners.Forgive me been out of it for a while are they what you are talking about? In my day they were the best and the alternative was Joke ahamas which Honda fitted.

Thanks all for the inputs,

Saves a heap of time: thinking I may go with the Avons...

Notably can only find the RoadRunner in 19", the required (400F) 18" Avons being RoadRiders. Anyone suggest the fundamental difference... eg the 'Runner spec'd in inches, whereas the 'Rider in metric?

Cheers again
Lobo

The Roadrunners on my 500/4 are:
90/90 19" on the front
110/90 18" on the rear (this is as close to the old 4.25/85 that you'll find nowadays)

Cheers Steve,

The 400F spec tyres are 3.0/18 ..& ...3.5/18.  And on all the UK Web sites I've visited, none offer a RoadRunner @ 18"....only a RoadRider. Notably, the yank websites DO offer RoadRunners in 18"! So..I'm confused... or just bloody hopeless at Internet / ebay searching!

Specifically though, I have found a few tyre threads that mention the optimum (modern)  size tyre for the 400F are 90/90-18 & 110/90-18; with more than one saying 'stay away from wider than spec  / larger tyres" as they do not necessarily infer more grip, will make steering heavier, and some stuff about side stand issues ... which lost me... but i think he was on about basic clearance I think - tho there was some implication about lean angle when parked??!

So, to keep it simple, thought I'd go the Avon RoadRiders in the (metric) sizes above....unless someone now comes up with otherwise compelling info!

As always, there is simply too much bloody choice in life!

Thanks again,
Simon

I've always used roadriders, in the sizes recomended on the avon website. They are lovely. Used to get about 14K out the front and 7K rear, doing two 20 mile trips round country roads a day to work. Never had any nasty moments either. Personally, I think choosing appearance over grip is pretty daft, I like to stay upright.
