K31977 starter motor
« on: October 07, 2013, 07:15:19 PM »
Hi,
Are the starter motors on the 550 range the same.
I have a problem when starting the bike, it sounds as though some of the teeth are stripped loud grating noise.
Checked the teeth on the starter and the starter gear reduction through the starter motor hole.
All looks ok so just wondering if they are all the same, I fear they are !

Thanks

Hi Paul the starter motors should be quiet, it could be the starter clutch, parts are available from D Silvers
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

To rebuild the starter clutch you need the bottom crankcase off and primary shaft out, all the 500/550 parts are the same.

the 500/550 are normaly very reliable on the starter clutch unless stood with grubby, sludgy oil for a very long time. If rebuild is necessary you need 3 off each roller, springs and spring caps
