Engine swapping.
« on: December 08, 2013, 11:01:01 PM »
This is what I've been up to this past week  ;)  I took the engine out of my F1 to fit in my 1970 cb750, the engine in my old 750 has been smoker on 1 or 2 pots for a long time and is burning oil,

my F1 has been off the road for a couple of years and needs a few things to put it back on the road , so I thought I might as well use the engine as its a good one,

I had to take the exhaust studs out to fit the earlier type stubs,  that was a job in itself  ::) I used the double nut method on some of the studs & a stud extractor on some of the others, 2 of the studs sheared off so I had to drill them out and helicoil the holes,

the rest of the engine swap went smoothly but these engines are flippin heavy and the take a bit of wagglin in and out  :P,

there was no one to help me so I had to use a van wheel rim and a board to get the engine out onto and back in again  ;) cheers Mick.

Hi Mick, - just up the road from you. Congrats on getting those studs out - not a job anyone would relish especially when they start to snap off - didn't let it beat you  :). Happy to lend a hand and find out a bit more about these beasts in future if you like...
cheers

;) good going its always hard work lifting them engines out, no wonder them japs got slanty eyes and buck teeth lifting them lumps all day.  :o exhaust studs  don't even go there I even wrecked a stud extractor on them buggers, there is a f2 motor in my sidecar while I rebuilt the k0 motor I said id swap them back over when the f2 blows lol I hope it lasts forever I dread the thought of changing them back over , I'm still suffering after rebuilding another k0 motor last year its still not finished I must be getting old lol
p.s is your bike a k1 you say its a 1970? must be an early one

Hi Steff, according to john Wyatt's book my bike was in the first batch of 750's to go to the Netherlands its frame number is 1031114, I found it on ebay in kent in 2005 with no reg number & no doc's, I got it registered on a age related plate H reg 1970, cheers Mick  ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread a litte but Mick you mention John Wyatt's book, just intrigued as to what this is, does it list engine numbers and frame numbers and their origins?

Hi Mick, I'm in Grange. Definitely up for meeting for a ride at say Devils bridge.Would be interested to see what you make of my bike. I haven't ridden these before but despite the low mileage though smooth  it seems a little wheezy and unwilling to rev freely to the red line. Might just be that I am more used to modern engines.  Previous owner thought the carbs may need synching - may be we could have a look at that sometime?
cheers

well done mick, just putting my engine in today, and going to try the engine on its side, frame over the top method with an engine hoist, yours is looking good! I don't think I could manage your method without help, and touch up paint?
well done again
