If its an older repair try petrol as the ethanol in todays mix seems to attack all the old style repairs!!!!(and fibreglass tanks)

Someone has put resin in the tank for a reason. The last tank i had cleaned due to rust was soda blasted, with great result. Don't know if there is any chemical on the market that can shift resin or what ever it is.

I have had electronics devices for my business potted in epoxy resin de-potted chemically but its pretty nasty stuff. Can find out for you though if you like. May have been Tetrahdrofuran (THF) I think.

;)  yes Bryan is right just keep using the the tank the ethanol will destroy that and any fibre glass tanks, the EU has given the go ahead for more ethanol to be added next year happy days to come I think lol ,last year a guy showed me some stuff he pulled out a petrol tank he was working on that had been lined with resin it looked like brown sugar and it made a real mess of the fuel system
only the weekend I was pulling sheets of the stuff  out of my sidecar tank it was petseal in my case sealed it back in the eighties on top of rust hopefully my tank wont leak anytime soon I'm just waiting for the blocked carb jets now  ::)

Go here.    http://www.tankcareproducts.co.uk/      Scroll right down to sealant removers.

I have used this stuff to get failing tank sealer out of two tanks.........neither of them needed sealing in the first place.

Tank sealer is ghastly stuff, to be used as a last resort and only if it's really needed.

If the ethanol in the petrol is breaking down the sealant, them meths would do the job, basically, this is ethanol with 5% methanol added to stop folk drinking it and to avoid the alcohol duty.
THF is pretty nasty and may now be a banned substance (possible carcinogen).

so far I have tried petrol and then Acetone noting. i would leave with just petrol and use but the liner is about 1 inch thick at the bottom and it keeps stopping the fuel exiting. i have ordered some MEK (read on the other forum this will shift anyrhing) fingers crossed.
so far spent £60 may have got another tank for that  ;D

Billy
Thanks

I have just re done a 1959 BSA tank, I sealed it with petseal back in 1985 and the ethenol has broken it down and it has sprung a small leak.
I have used a product called Slosh, recommended by VMCC members.
I also got a tin of cleaner that removed the petseal very successfully.
I'm waiting to get the tank painted before i fill with petrol and test for ethenol resistance but only time will tell if it's as good as people say.

Hi,
MEK is a solvent type cleaner for preparing industrial plastic pipe for "glueing" fittings on, both the glue and MEK dissolve the plastic surface, which makes it a very efficient cleaner of most things, including paint brushes, extreme care should be taken not to get any onto your person as it is also a powerful degreaser, if MEK won't shift it, I don't know what will, Just bear in mind it is an industrial product and treat accordingly.----Ken
