Liquid Packing?

In various places in the manual (76 400-f) it mentions using liquid packing on mating surfaces (eg. the crank cases where there is no gasket).  Previously someone has used some red stuff that has gone brittle and I find bits all over the place (some in the sump).  Wanting to avoid this again, what recommendations can anyone make? And when I install new gaskets (with clean faces) would you recommend using it (or other stuff) with gaskets - or just stick to using it just where the manual recommends? Thanks.

I use RTV sealant, but you must smear it on. A thin coat. People put loads on and the access just goes to wast in your oil pump. For gaskets i use Hylomar spray, same again THIN COAT.

Thanks - so something like this: "V-tech Clear RTV Silicone Gasket Sealant 250C (85gm) - Water Resistant Sealant"?  Any reason why a spray rather than a tube - to aid putting a thin layer on?

250c is a bit low. Look for a higher temperature RTV that is oil resistant/ transmission fluid resistant . The spray is spot on but, a bit tricky when applying to crankcases.

Use Yamabond or the equivalent case sealant,  sparingly..... grey and quite runny usually.
Goes on crankcase mating faces around edges and on main bearing joint faces.
