Hammerite Smooth Rattle Cans
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:06:32 AM »
What is going on with Hammerite?! I used to find it the stuff to use for a quick, thick coating of tough gloss black.
They seem to have changed the formula though. The last couple of cans I have had been next to useless.
It is so thin you need at least 5 coats on everything. Is is so runny it moves away from peaks and edges. And it takes forever to dry. I put a couple of coats on some small bits for eBay yesterday evening. Still very sticky this morning  >:(.

Yes, it is crap. More thinner than paint inside a spray can.

I've sent a complaint to Hammerite ;). I'm currently trying a Hammerite substitute from B&Q called Multi-purpose Colours. Seems much better so far.

Unfortunately it's the EU poking their nose into British affairs again. Brussels has decided that the solvents in the original formula hammerite/smoothrite are too dangerous for us mere mortals to handle, plus they didn't like the percentage of volatile organic compounds in it, and it's not just this paint they're ruining, many household paints have had to change formulation to comply with the new regs, even good old UHU modellers glue has had to change and is now c**p. So no good complaining to the paint manufacturers, it's Brussels and it's poxy meddling. Incidentally, these are the same morons who decided fuel should contain an ever increasing amount of rubber eating paint stripping ethanol :o >:(
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Are yes Green1. I did my clocks with black satin rustoleum. That seems quite thick and the nozzel blocked easily. Expensive at £11 a tin too, but did leave a good finish.

Heat the can in hot water for a wile and it will spray much better.

Go along totally with the Hammerite comments, used it this week for the first time in years, small parts i stripped from the bike last weekend ,thought it was me not shaking the can long enough, after 10 mins, the same, rubbish now.
I'll try the other recommendations.
