Front Fork Oil Leak
« on: May 21, 2014, 12:08:19 PM »
I never noticed any problem with the oil seals on the forks until last Friday. Went for a 20 mile run on what was a fairly warm day. Parked up in the garage, the next day I noticed about a tablespoon of what was very clean oil under the front forks. The opposite fork also had oil running down the fork leg. If I compress the forks I do get a thin film of oil appear. The forks are in good condition with no pits or roughness. I can see no obvious damage to the seals. Any advice?

Shaun
Only advice I can give is change the oil to the right amount in case of over filling and if they still leak change the seals
Cheers

Hi Shaun, just to be double safe check that it is definitely fork oil and not front brake hydraulic fluid leaking from a pipe or union and travelling down the fork leg.

Thanks for the advice. It is definitely oil from the forks and not hydraulic fluid. I think an accumulation of oil must have built up under the dust cover and then leaked out when the bike was parked. At least it didn't leak onto the front brake disc which could have been interesting  :o

Oddjob you are right on both counts. I haven't been on any long runs and on this occasion it was left parked in the sun for a few hours. Normally it is kept in a cool dark garage.
