Tiny Bits & Pieces
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:17:51 PM »
Hello all,

I'd like to get hold of a box of nice clean shiny new washers, bolts, set screws, etc. All the kind of stuff that fits (or can be made to fit) every Jap bike ever made.

Does anyone know of a good supplier of such stuff? I'm sure that'd be cheaper than seeking out 'spares' and will do the job just as well. In the meantime, I'm wire brushing every single washer I have removed from the bike... along with most of the skin off my fingers!

Ta all,

D.

Drew, to clean up old nuts, bolts and washers. Make a tumbler with blasting media in it.
I have used a old Kenwood mixer with media in many years ago. Had the bread attachment on slow speed. Cheaper that buying all new nuts & bolts.

Lots of restorers take the job lot of nuts bolts and screws from a restoration bike and have then re-zinc plated, about sixty quid i think

Thank you all.

I failed to mention that many of my old bits have been bashed, lost threads, lost screw heads, etc. and so not worth re-plating. I'll check out the suppliers mentioned and also consider other trade fairs, jumbles, etc.

I'll have quite a few such items in my old jam jars, but you can guarantee I won't have a full set of any of them!

Cheers,

D.

One of the hard to find items is M8x1.25 BZP nuts with 12mm hex AF.
Not sure how much they are from Honda. On the chromed M6 bolts I grind the markings off the top of a SS part bolt (cheap) and then put then in a surface grinder then polish to a chrome like finish.

Drew,  i am not sure how original you want to keep it but, on of the cheapest options is a stainless allen kit. TSS fasteners should do a full kit. Tina and Paul are very helpful.

Further to Trigger's post be very specific about what you want. I spent a considerable amount of cash on a complete 'restoration' kit of fasteners for my '400 (Inox) and was extremely unhappy when a good many of the pieces were internal hex bolts (Allen key type). No mention anywhere in the sales blurb, rather many of the pics were of the standard cross-head - ie somewhat misleading.
So... if you are bothered... be warned!

Cheers for the offer but I am pretty well sorted out now on bolts etc. My 750K0 being a '69 built one needs the big '8' bolts to be original in some places, and it's the first thing people look for in a resto of those bikes. DSS now imports the Yamiya no.8 bolt kits so I will be forking out out for one of those kits. A guy is selling me a load of NOS Honda bolts for my CB250 at Lotherton Hall (near Leeds) VJMC Show at the end of this month ... again this model has some big '8' bolts but I am not too fussy on that bike.

BZP is Bright Zinc Plated, sorry I should have put it in full.

Cheers ... Ash

The big "8" was a marking on the heads of bolts and some screws to identify them as metric thread, as opposed to the previously used JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) threads.

By big 8 do you mean the head was stamped with an 8? I seem to recall those bolts but can't be certain. I think maybe the 500 used the same type of bolts on the crankcase halves.

I wasn't really offering you Ash BTW, I was thinking of the thread starter who was looking for some bolts

Oh sorry -- doh.. didn't read correct as usual ... Ash

Thank you all again (and especially for nearly starting a trading sub-thread!).... hmmm, 'thread'; seems appropriate for these discussions!

Oddjob, I'll come back to you when I've properly scoped out my requirements.

Cheers, D.
