CBF1 journey starts here
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:15:47 PM »
OK, the project starts.
The last time I owned a Honda it was a CB175 (twin carb) back in the 70"s great fun and fond memories.
Now somewhat older but with my son we've just bought a 1978 CB750F1 - it's already had some work done and seems to be pretty well spec'd.
Like the other 'newbie' we plan to also convert it into a Cafe Racer.

A few areas of  immediate advice:
1) I need to change the tank, current tank is a Seeley Alloy Phil Read Replica (100% perfect condition) I just think it's too big for the bike. What are the Honda model options range for a direct fit?
2) The bike also has fully restored Lester Mags (100% perfect condition) but think some traditional spoked wheels will look best - any advice re the hubs. Bike has discs front and back on an old stock Dresda Rear Swing Arm
3) Going to need to source a new rear seat (brown leather) and aluminum cowel (Cafe racer style) any one had any good experiences/recommendations?
4) Clip on's - any do's and dont's?

Thats the immediate questions, I'm sure more will surface as we progress.
Looking forward to chatting to you all and maybe meeting up if a local CB750 ride out is something you do?
Best
Dunc

Jesus wept.  You're chucking away the two best aftermarket bits on the bike: a Seeley tank and Lester wheels.

Keep them and chuck something else away.

The reason for the Seeley tank is simple - the stock tank is too small and it's a relatively thirsty engine.  I had a five-gallon alloy tank on mine, back in the day.

Lesters maybe better but you can't beat spoked wheels.Oddjob the F1 has the massive rear disk.
The Ali tank sounds interesting but I do prefer the f1 tank long and sleek.

Not 100% sure but i think the only Honda tank that fits properly is the F1 one and the rear wheel hub is also unique (I think), maybe same as 750 auto but i never seen one of those

F1 has a rear disc, yes.  Opposed-piston jobbie, and bigger diameter too, so actually more powerful than the front one.  For the Yanks, apparently.

If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

My F1 has an F2 tank, the only difference between the two tanks is that the petrol tap spigot is a different size and therefore the tap is different as well, as I am finding out the F1/F2 tank is very small and is a pain. The following is from the handbook, the fuel tank holds 3.7 imp gallon capacity (17 liters, including 5 liters reserve which is 1.1 imp. gallon).
As far as I know they are the only tanks that fit the F1 apart from aftermarket ones. A 5 gallon version would be a load better.

Cheers
