Needed - rear wheel
« on: November 01, 2014, 10:16:01 AM »
Hi guys, wondering if anyone knows where I could get a rear wheel for my 1977 550f2?   There are a few on ebay, but most are from the U.S.  I'm happy to have the rim re-chromed,  if needed.  Suggestions?

It is the wheel hub and its fittings that is the important part you want. Not worth re-chroming a rim. D.I.D are around £80 new.  I have bought wheels from the states before and always have asked for it to be stripped and just the hub to be sent.
One should turn up soon in this country. Have seen one on ebay at 185, if it has stainless spokes it is worth it because a new rim is £80, stainless spokes are £75, to build the wheel and true is £80. Does not seem a lot when you look at it that way.

The one on ebay is from the same fellow I bought that engine from.  It's all original, from that same bike.  It has the original factory tire on it and it still has the rubber nibs - it looks like new.  Considering going that route.

It will not have stainless spokes then. A little too much money. Did see another for £120 but, that will need to be knocked down. Always check the hubs on these, they are prone to heat cracks.

Cracked brake liners are repairable. Re lining costs about £45 -£50 or did when I last asked. I have done a few at home on my lathe, but at the prices Paul Jackson does it I am not about to go into competition with him, not to mention I am entierly self taught from a book and the school of have a go. rebuilding a wheel yourself is not to be dismissed either, again something I had a go at, re using old spokes from 2 wheels, picking the best bits. Using a swing arm mounted in a vice as a jig and a bit of fence wire as a pointer to get it round and true. Quite satisfying. An odd way to go about things but the reason for a rebuild was my lathe could only fit a bare hub in.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Where do you go for the DID rims?  The correct widths are 1.85 front and rear, 44 spoke, correct?

D.I.D are manufactures of Chains, sprockets and wheel rim. They are considered as number 1 in the industry. You should find the D.I.D mark on your wheel rims.

Yep, just found the mark. So when I buy and fit a new chain over the winter that's the make I shall buy. Thanks  :-*
