Isn't modern fuel rubbish!
« on: December 30, 2014, 06:59:11 PM »
After a break of a few weeks (more like 3 months!) I managed to get myself back into the garage today to continue work on the CR replica, wouldn't start, not a glimmer!, plugs wettish, big spark, I drained a little fuel from a float bowl, it looked a bit brown, drained a bit from the tank, it looked a bit yellowish brown, drained the float bowls and tank, got some new fuel, started straight away, then No1 cylinder stopped firing, took the float bowl and main jet out, sprayed everything with carb cleaner, re-assembled, No1 cylinder firing again :), then No3 and 4 cylinders went down :-\, so tomorrow I will take the carbs off and give them a good clean, I know I shouldn't have left fuel in the bike but approx 12 weeks jeez!,I remember a few years ago kicking over a moped that had been stored in a neighbours shed for 10 years, it started immediately, no chance of that happening if it had had this rubbish that were are now sold in the tank.
Has anyone used a fuel stabiliser additive?, any good?.

Never had a problem but I do try to run my bikes every couple months saying that my Aprilia stopped running about 3 years ago and I haven't touched it yet   ::) If I'm planing to leave the bikes for a while I use the v power fuel.

Don't now what gas is available in the UK at this time but here I always fill with Sp98,Anything with ethanol in big miss its shite like E95.I store my bikes over the winter for best part of 3 months and so far no probs come spring but I always drain the bowls.

I never drain the carbs luckily i'v not had any trouble
I have a petrol generator that only gets used every couple of years the fuel stinks but it still starts first pull.

I always put Yamalube stabiliser in the barn bikes as they tended to only come out once per year for an MOT.
I have put the stuff in my 500 for the winter too.

I'm beginning to think that maybe the fuel wasn't the problem, I used a liquid tank liner (red oxide colour) in the fibreglass tank, maybe some of that didn't cure properly and has been dissolved by the fuel? It shouldn't have done though because I mixed it well and left it to cure for much longer than was recommended in the instructions, given the experience above from other members I'm now doubting it's the fuel, but I will get some stabiliser just to be on the safe side.

Was the tank liner ethanol resistant?

Yes, according to the manufacturer 100% ethanol proof.

I had that red liner....or at least a liner that was red?In my 500
after about 2 years bike was running abit rough ....next visit wouldn't start ...fuel was a funny murky colour in carb bowls...( it has those 750 ones fitted with the spring clip on the bottom so was real easy to check)
Bowl had a load of fine red silt sitting in the bottom?
Took tank of and tipped it out and it was absolutely swimming with residue of that red sh*t...
After cleaning tank right back to metal carbs stripped and new fuel lines its never missed a beat....
I brought that stuff 5-6 years ago and was told it was the dogs....?

It wasn't
I use caswel system now still holding up in fiberglass tank..2 1/2 years to date

It could be my problem then, although there was no reddish hue to the fuel in the bowls/tank, the stuff that came out of the bowls was the same colour as clean engine oil, strange , I'll get the carbs off and cleaned properly later and take it from there, cheers mark
