EXHAUST - SPLIT COLLARS/COLLETS
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:47:52 PM »
Hi Chaps.
What way do your split exhaust collars go in ?. I'm sure that when I took mine out the phlange end was down inside the head but in the Haynes manual they show the phlange out by the frilly retaining rings. I have looked on internet and article on DSS says 'make sure you note which way round the collars are so you can replace them the same way' which leads me to believe they can go either way. I'm confused............please help  :'( :'( :'(
Ta in advance
Julie

The flange goes against the frilly thing. It has a recess for it. Would they fit the other way round? The non-flange end bears down on the downpipe flange which in turn presses against the gasket.

Thanks Tom, that all makes sense. I have a feeling that was the way they were before I took the pipes off. I think what has thrown me is the article I read on DSS site which made me think 'what way were mine in' !!!!

Thanks for your help

Keeping the retainer rings from sliding down the pipes is another trick.
I use old socks wrapped around the pipes to hold them !

Or get some narrow masking tape to hold the two split collets together(one turn round) which is what Honda did

Thanks Bryan and Clem, the socks and tape have just worked a treat, pipes all fitting nice and snug. Not the easiest of jobs to do though, all that pushing, pulling and twisting.

Don't mention dentists :( :(. As a Nurse I can't stand anything related to teeth, eyeballs or ingrowing toenails. Have had to keep my eyes shut in the past when working as a Scrub Nurse on any of these parts, not ideal as you can imagine. ;D ;D ;D

Tom... loved the tech-speak..."the flange goes against the frilly thing"!

But... worked for me, couldn't have put it better!
