350 4
« on: January 21, 2015, 10:25:37 PM »
Can parts from the 350 4 go on the 400 4 such as swing arm as example and if people could help with any other parts that might fit

Thanks Bradley

I have both 350/4 and 400/4 and parts books for both.  There are a great many common parts with 333 part numbers, which is 350/4 on the 400/4 which normally has 377 part numbers.
A quick check on the swing arm shows 333 middle number for 350 and 377 for 400, so apparently different.  If you are unsure you can check each part on CMSNL web site, with pics and descriptions and part numbers.  A hell of a job to do for the whole bike though!!

lots of parts definitely interchange:

wheels except rear sprocket

fork legs and stanchions but not shrouds

mudguards

chainguard, but 350 is black

indicators but not stalks

airbox

clutch

engine ball bearings

crank and rods

generator, rotor, stator and cover

points cover

rear dampers but 350 has shrouds

hundreds of bolts and nuts

Thanks for that just trying to look if the 350/4 wiring loom will fit a 400/4 or if the 500/4 will fit the 400/4 any ideas?

Thanks

500 definately not and i doubt the 350-400 interchange you need to check the part numbers

Definitely different part numbers but the main physical differences are:

350 ignition switch positioned under left front of tank, 400 on steering head
Idiot lights on 350 as 500 as part of handlebar clamp, 400 are in between instruments.
350 USA had high rise bars so switchgear wiring longer.
Headlamp has no switch on some models

Good bits,
Elecs on air box almost identical
Brake switch positions same
Indicators more or less same positions

Not insurmountable problems if you are good at soldering and wiring, but I wouldn't want to pay someone to modify

I once recived a cb400/4 wiring loom which was miss described as being off a cb550k3, it was possible to get the bike (550/k5) up to mot standard with that loom but the result was not exactly elegant and had a few more connections to doubt  if fault finding. It was still a lot faster and easier to install than building one from scratch. I think I had to make up half a dozen bridging wires to being various bits to the right part of the bike - I think ignition related, I cannot remember exactly. If going this route it is worth ordering the correct colours of wiring to make things simple in the future. There is nothing I hate more than wiring repairs done using wrong colour wires as wires wind up changing colour mid length means you need to trace every wire back down its length every time something is disturbed.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

Fully agree that you should always use correct colours and sizes for mods to loom and as said, easier to modify an existing 'nearly correct' loom than start from scratch.  Also if you have to unwrap parts of the loom, then use the correct non sticky looming tape to finish off.  PLEASE don't use scotchlocks anywhere on a motorcycle, unless you carry your bus fare home at all times.
Another plus point I forgot to add, the coils and points wiring are in the same positions, oh, and the neutral switch too.  What could possibly go wrong?

Sorry Bitsa and Ka Ja, missed out the word 'between' instruments, have edited it now so as not to cause confusion.
