A good match
« on: January 23, 2015, 05:47:23 PM »
Many people have asked me if the engine paint i use is a close match to Honda original.
The engine is painted with SIMVHT31C and the hub has just come out of the vapor blaster. I think it is as close as it gets.

How do you get it to shine like that, do you lacquer it as well ?

No lacquer. The paint has been cured on the engine and the hub is bare alloy.

I think it must vary from model to model Graham. Your hub looks like the finish I did on my 400/4 hubs in 1986 but on the '69 350K1 the hubs are almost pristine factory finish and look like quite a high polish then satin clear coated on top. I am told the Eastwood Diamond Clear stuff is the lacquer to use after chromate etch with some Alodine product to make it adhere properly. Vic World also talked once  about some kind of chromate etch too on Honda alloy that's cleared.

Still researching it myself. Think the hub centres are vapour blast type finish, again clear coated.

So is it a paint or enamel ?

Ok, I understand that on the engine it's paint and not enamel and it's not lacquered but where does the slight sheen come from ?. I have used VHT paint in the past and I have never got much of a sheen and definately not a shine and I found it a sod to keep clean as dirt seems to get into the surface of it. I suppose you never have that problem Graham ?  ::) ::) ::)

The hub is bare alloy and the engine is VHT paint ;)
