Electroplating in East Sussex/Kent?
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:50:11 PM »
Apart from London and Brighton are there any other electroplates in the East Sussex/Kent area that members have used or would recommend to undertake Bright Zinc, Black Zinc and Chrome plating?

Hi Sprinta
Although I have not used them yet, I have heard good things about Ashford Chroming. They seem to do most types of plating and do a fair amount on classic bikes and cars. Details  01233 660879 / 01233 841877
mail: sales@ashfordchroming.com.
Other than them I thing the nearest is up in the Margate area,
May be of help to you

Thanks Julie

Unfortunately they do not do Zinc plating, which is about 95% of what I require being re-plated.

I spoke to Ashford Chroming a couple of years ago for my downpipes/collector but they were expensive. £400 when I would expect more like £250.

You can do your own zinc plating, it's easy and rewarding.

Plus 1 on Gateros plating but if you don't have loads to do then you can buy half quantities of the plating chemicals from them . Ask for Julie (Husband Wife and Son team ... nice people). Prep is a bit of a pain though because the finish is only as good as the prep. You can remove the old zinc plating in Brick Cleaner (Hydrochloric acid). problem is that the full plating kit costs as much as a commercial plater would charge for a bikes worth of parts.

I think the benefits that come with home plating is you get the finish you want, you can re plate many items as I have over the years and still have the same chemicals left over to do that next restoration.

Biggest bonus of all is that you don't loose that impossible to replace part that you entrusted to the local plater.

This photo link shows the original parts I re plated for my 1968 Bridgestone 350 GTR.

The photo of the parts you have plated look very good but doing my own plating is not a route I really want to go. However, L & B have just quoted me £250 to primarily zinc plate my parts!!!!!!!!!!!

Need to get some other quotes as I can't believe that it really costs that much? They say that because it is re-plating all parts have to be wired, which I can appreciate but £250 just seems way over the top.

I think my kit cost about £85? You don't need the all singing and dancing kit just the basic, it's not hard to do and I bet you would enjoy it. Instructions come with the kit.
