400/4 missing breather chamber
« on: March 14, 2015, 04:51:06 PM »
After some advice please.
Discovered my bike is missing the metal grille that sits at the bottom of the air filter box. On looking into this, I found the whole breather chamber assembly beneath the air filter is also missing.
Am I right in thinking the hose from the breather cover on the top of the engine is supposed to go into the breather assembly under the air filter?? At the moment, it runs right down by the centre stand.
Bike seems to run ok, but would the absence of a breather unit affect running??
Any comments much appreciated.
Cheers
Harold

I've never had an issue running my 750F1 without it fitted. It's supposed to recycle any unburnt hydrocarbons that blow past the rings back through the intake system. It was only put there to satisfy American emissions regulations of the time.
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!

Harold,

Yes the breather pipe fits onto a plastic moulding at the bottom of the air filter assembly.
It also has another pipe which acts as a drain.
Don't think it will affect the running of the bike just the emissions.

Thanks for that. Bike does run well, so sounds like it's not too much of an issue.

I binned mine ages ago.   The gases from the breather box used to mess up the air filter
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Hi Harold,

My old bike had them fitted and I have replaced them during the rebuild. Although I accept others have removed them and I suspect they make no difference to performance, if you're looking for originality, Steve at http://www.400fourbits.co.uk/ has some. In my experience his charges are reasonable and he delivers pretty promptly.

Cheers,

D.

Prob to satisfy elf'n'safety, on the later CB750s K's this breather was routed down a swing arm & off to the side... ie so not venting (oil mist) onto the rear tyre. I suppose ensuring it's sited to one side & points L or R might be something to consider...
