I'm sure I read somewhere that aftermarket suppliers will not make double skinned pipes as the tooling involved makes it not cost-effective.
Out of interest, do 'modern' bikes still have double skinned pipes or have manufacturers gone for single skinned?
I think many nowadays are not chromed so 'blueing' (or 'yellowing') maybe not such an issue.

The downpipes on my Tiger 800 are a sort of brown colour. They are not chromed.

I suspect that people expect to see shiny chrome pipes on a classic bike, but on a modern bike it doesn't matter.

the tooling cost to double skin a specific 4-1 is likely to be around £30,000

divide this by sales of (perhaps) a 100 and the cost of a double skinned system against single skinned (and a bit of discolouration) is increased by £300!

I am lucky enough to have a new set of originals but if not I would have gladly paid the extra 300 GBP for double skinned. I can't understand why Yamiya never went for double skinned, as they did on the 750 pipes they repro.

Bottom line is that (probably) 90% of all potential purchasers although they would like the extra feature, have another use for the £300. Its like when we have an option on a particular model and deciding on making (lets say) a 4-2 system or a 4-1 at lower cost- if asked 90% of customers will prefer the 4-2 if it looks more like original- and 95% will actually buy the 4-1 becuase its much cheaper

Hi Ian, take your point but our old mate 'bikepusher' sells NOS complete systems, when he gets them, for 1500 GBP and reckons he could sell them all day long at that.
People are as fanatical about 400/4 resto's as the 750K0 and are willing to pay the silly money. Yamiya told me only a couple of months ago that there were no plans to repro the 400/4 system  and they are now doing them. Betcha either themselves or PMC come out with a double-skinned version in due course. Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't track down the original tooling from Sankei.

and I think its good that there are really two markets

1. the person who wants it 100% original and is willing to pay mega money

and

2. they want a nice old bike from their past to ride and enjoy (and still have some money left for the other toys and hobbies)

Motad will continue in market 2
