Sat Nav power supply
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:02:53 AM »
Well after some cardiac problems in February I'm back to normal, as I hope to be using the bike more and my sense of direction is still rubbish I want to fit a power supply for my sat nav, at present it is in a waterproof case mounted on the handlebars, but it does not have a power supply. It works great but I'm always aware that it could run out of juice anytime.
I bought a waterproof socket from eBay and my first idea was to wire it up to the old indicator audible horn thingy wires that way it would only be live when the ignition was turned on, but looking at it I could attach it directly to the battery as it would only draw power when the sat nav is plugged in. Any ideas, views, suggestions ?

Cheers

The 12V power socket on my Tiger is wired to the battery via a fuse. It is powered without the ignition on. I suspect they are all like that (although the one in my car isn't...)

I think its 15A as it is really designed for heated clothing.

If you only want to power a satnav, anything small will do.

Grand I'll look for an inline fuse holder then

Just for info if anyone else wants to do this I have just been to Halfords and bought an in line fuse holder (5 amp) and fuses, the end of the lead for the TOM TOM which goes into the cigarette lighter socket has a 2 amp fuse set in it and it lets down from 12v to 5v so don't wire it in direct !
