1972 CB500 K1
« on: April 12, 2015, 11:02:22 PM »
Hi all, I have come across the above bike for sale and the seller has asked me to make him an offer.
It is a runner but a complete mess, a lot of work to make it look right. I know it a "how long is a piece of string" type of thing but what is a reasonable offer?
I have tried looking around for a similar thing to gauge a price but they seem to be either basket cases or minters.
Any help would be appreciated.

its very difficult to value without seeing it, I have seen rough restoration projects fetch strong money, often £400-£500 even for non runners. Don't under estimate the cost of restoration, chrome is expensive, original exhausts are almost unobtainable and all the small parts add up.If you could buy it for a few hundred you wont lose out.
Love the 500 and 550 have a 500 called Lazarus under restoration

I know what you mean, I am just completing a CB750 K1 now and it has been interesting to say the least.
I shall offer him £300 and see what he says, he can only say no.

The exhausts can set you back more than £2k for a NOS set. Seat pans are like hens teeth in good condition and forget about getting the original tank trim.

I wasn't thinking of a resto job but have other plans in mind.

Beware, 'running' doesn't always mean much.  I had an engine that would run but when I stripped it down it the whole thing was worn out apart from perhaps a few gears.  I stopped adding up the cost of repairs once I had written off the camshaft, rockers, pistons, crankshaft, main bearings, primary chain, cam chain and tensioners etc...
