Disc Grinding
« on: April 15, 2015, 08:18:10 AM »
I have got three CB750 front brake discs (rotors)  one from K7, one from K1-K6 and a rare 750K0 one. The only one I need to use is the K0 one but typically it is the only one with slight wear grooves (nothing bad). Anyone know the best way to have it ground/  re-furbed flat? We have several surface grinders here at work but I guess it would be a totally different machine tool to do this properly. That disc came on a '69 750K0 wheel with perfect chrome  rim and axle etc bought and shipped from the USA for less than 100 quid, inc shipping and NO import charges. It was shipped from the States just wrapped in cling film with the tyre and tube still on. Those were the days my friend,  about 4 years ago. The import charges alone  would probably cost that much now.

Any ideas ?

Have always used a disc cutter in the past, it cuts from both sides at the same time so, it is kept true. Have seen people cut them on a lathe before but, a surface grinder should work if the disc is not in bad condition.

Do you know a company who can quote me on doing it Graham?

Long time since I engineered in a real shop but a disc can be mounted on any type of grinder. I did a variety of pieces in my youth. :)
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Set/sit. Bought/brought FFS. Bloody Americans.

Ash - I've spoken with a local grinding specialist about doing this for one of my K0 discs - I've also asked if it would be cheaper to do a 'batch' to save on machine setup time etc..

Once I know the costs for one / a batch I'll let you know and see what we can do..

I know a couple of places in sheffield who could do it. The kind of places youd be best off poping down to though. Id guess they would charge something around £40 going by what they charged to do my lathes spindle.

We have a large  lapping machine here but I would have to separate the disc from the carrier to use this. Vic World evidently separates the two but how much of a job is it to re-rivet back together again safely?

Used to sell/buy cast iron discs that came with a set of bolts and nyloc nuts but that would not look original although engineering wise a perfect sollution
