Thinking about re-assembly of the engine whilst waiting for the case to be blasted and re-boring work - assume oil seals should be dry fit to the crank cases i.e. no sealant on outer face ?

Any tips, or potential 'gotchas' when re-assembling the 400 unit ?

Only make sure that the camchain horseshoe and tensioner are super free and there have been reports of bad repro sproket seale as these have a pathway for oil to the sprocket bearing and in the US they say thay can fail if seal no good (no experience of that first hand)

OK Thank for the tip !

The horseshoe tensioner was seized / mashed by chain, so all new bits going in - can't wait to get the crankcases back from blasting so that I can get things moving again !

Hi Andy,

My only tip (picked from someone else on this forum) is to make sure you clean and air balst every tiny bit of your cases when you get them back from blasting. Remove every last nut, bolt, etc. I found on mine a blanking plate that hadn't been removed (i.e. the plug thing that's retained in place by the generator cover - see my leak story: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,8081.msg52792.html#msg52792). Behind that there were plenty of nasty beads just waiting to clog up newly refurbished engine!

Hi Drew, 

Yes I did read your experience, so it's on my list of 'not to forgets'  - I just can't remember where i put that list !

Engine casings should be back with me by the end of the week, and they have that plug and other threaded oil gallery plugs in place, so I'll make sure to remove them all and give everything a good wash and blow.

Just ordered some Threebond for the re-assembly  - did you use any on the oil seal outer surface, or leave them dry ?

I used sealant on mine - belt and braces.  I did have one leak, an intermittent leak that took ages to find.
A brand new gearchange shaft seal from DSS had gone hard over the years and had split.  Replaced with one from a seal shop for 3 quid; sorted.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?
