Shouldn't be anywhere near the red at a ton, probably no more than 6,000r.p.m, unless you are VERY undergeared, or in 4th with a slipping clutch!:-S

Seized solid, the rev counter dropped to zero instantly. May have saved it if he thought to pull the clutch in. You can almost hear the plastic cracking and his wallet opening.  ;D

No wonder he was sliding all over, didn't see the oil thought it was just a lockup.  That's one big blow up.

I can remember back in the days,

 the engine never failed,it was always electrical problems,

 maybe the conrod poking through the cases knocked a wire off ????

 or all the oil underneath was from the generator ,nothing to do with the big hole in the sump!!!
