Whatever happened to quality ?
« on: June 18, 2015, 02:04:49 PM »
The 400 wasn't running as good as I wanted and after a bit of investigation I found the spark was weak for pots 2 and 3, I swapped the coils over to test a theory and found it was indeed the coil, I decided I would replace both and bought the replacements from David Silver, I fit them this morning and as soon as I fired the bike up the left one immediately arced to the frame on the inside, I got the torch out and found it was arching from the silver 12V sticker so I removed the coil and peeled off the sticker, what you can see in the photo below is what was under it, it is like the sticker was put there to hide the exposed wire, it seems quality control no longer exists and I am getting sick and tired of having to return shoddy items, does this $h!+ only happen to me ? I contacted David Silver's and was dealt with by the brilliantly named Jason Slaymaker who told me to throw the bad one away and he has sent a replacement via next day delivery.

Just waiting for Bitsa to reprise his verdict on pattern parts... even if vindicated in this case.

I imagine they call him Jason Kingslayer (GoT reference for those who don't watch it. I'll get my coat)

Sankei exhausts? Pardon, I heard that!

All of those of you who have previously restored British iron will know only too well about pattern parts.  Now that the sources of much NOS Jap stuff have all but dried up this is the sh**e that we are left with.  Example, these 'genuine' Stanley indicator units which everyone and his goat we're selling.  Genuine my arms!  The chrome falls off when the wind blows (and I live in Orkney!)

Many of these repro companies will go to the wall eventually, but not until they have fleeced a lot of folk in the interim.

We just have to be careful and not buy stuff and leave it in the wardrobe (please don't tell her, she thinks it's just a stash of porno mags, far more acceptable apparently!) until we need it, without a thorough initial check.

You folks may already know but I just found a site in U.S. with lots of useful stuff, although there are no big surprise bits available which aren't around elsewhere.  Has a really good exploded view of assemblies with part numbers in the search facility, very helpful.

You sometimes have to look 'out of the box' and eek out parts from places that don't normally deal with us Brits.

e.g. Look what I just got from the 'Land of the Rising Yen'

Don't see these every day NOS and Genuine.

Stanley rear lamp housing .. as fitted to early UK bikes (CB750K0/K1, CD175 sloper, CB250/350 K0,K2, C50). (not 400/4 though Tom).. They always pit the chrome at the top where the 'Stanley bla bla text is stamped. There was also one sandcast 750 fitted with one ... the Gold 'Brighton Show' PP bike.

I bought some of the rubbers that connect the air box to the carbs from DS because  I'm getting too old and impatient to wrestle the existing ones back onto the center two carbs. Problem most likely caused by someone getting them half on and  screwing the clamps up tight many years ago. Wasn't me - honest.  Anyhow, the ones from DS are made of a lot thinner material and the OEM band clamps do not hold, even with the clamps tightened up they could spin round easy. I ended up cutting  packing strips out of an old rim tape and glueing it to the inside of the clamp.

They went on first time in a couple of minutes rather than the usual 30 minutes huffing ,puffing, skinned knuckles and associated bad language though.

Dave.
