Major problem?
« on: July 16, 2015, 03:41:06 PM »
Hi all,

I've been stripping my cb400 project down and was jut about to remove the engine when i noticed this......

A close up of what looks like a repair and a chipped head!

is this going to be a big problem?

I was planning on stripping and rebuilding the whole engine, but can this be repaired?

I've just drained the oil out to remove the engine so I guess I cant tess compression to see if it leaks, but it does look like the chip is filled with some flexible rubber filler stuff.

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers

Andy

It looks like someone has put the wrong bolt in and tightened it all the way.  It doesn't look serious and obviously isn't leaking, although I would use something stronger than a flexible filler.
As for the chip, again it isn't leaking so don't worry too much about it.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Previously owned by an ape I would suggest. Why is it when rebuilding these things the problems are neither Honda nor the ravages of time, it's always the knob head that owned it before. I would look at the rest of that engine with a microscope.

My mistake trigger, still new to all this :-[

Good to know it can be repaired though, I don't want any leaks when I install new gaskets as it looks like they've used a gasket sealer, which i've read is a big no no!

I hear you Royhall!

I think I may have been mugged off when I bought this! I guess he saw me coming.

now I've had time to go over the bike there's a lot of bodges, centre sand has been cut off completely, side stand is at an obscene angle and poorly welded, every screw head I've come across so far is rounded within an inch of its life and have had to be removed with a extractor, Possibly the wrong size sump, the list goes on.

All these problems will just make a more satisfying end result.

Cheers for your help guys.
