550f1 engine removal
« on: October 21, 2015, 06:14:12 PM »
Hi Guy's , can anyone tell me , is it possible to remove a 550 engine from the frame without removing the sump , I understand  removing breather cover would be necessary, also is it easier to lift out from left or right

I've had success removing the oil filter, breather cover and points cover, then  lay the engine on the right side on a nice soft surface (pillow) and lift the frame off of it.  Saves removing the sump, but not easy if the bike is fully assembled.

I always just pull the oil filter and breather cover, but then I am not the sort to worry about the paint and genrally have wanted the engine swapped inside a weekend. Also I wouldn't want to risk scoring the sump gaskett face when juggling an engine in a fully built up bike with no helpers around.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

I managed to remove the engine on my 550 with the sump still attached, I just removed the oil filter housing and breather cover and it came out on it's side no problem. Also, as I'm standing here looking at the sump, I wouldn't sit the engine on the floor without the sump on as there is a little oil tube thingy, that looks like that would hit the deck and snap off. I will say, I did have to have help to actually lift the engine from the floor once out of the frame  ;D ;D ;D ;D

The engines sit nicely enough with the oil filter housing and sump in situ, and as my shed is a bit of a mess I normally stick the oil filter back on as soon as that bit is clear of the frame, but still supported, minimalising the chances for dirt or dust to get in. I have about 8 500/550 engines stood like this awaiting either work or installation. I also like a very basic engine stand I picked up in a job lot that allows me to test engines complete with exhaust without installing it.

Matthew, any chances to see a picture of that engine stand?
