CB750 K1 Damaged frame/center stand
« on: November 25, 2006, 02:00:54 AM »
Hi I have a CB750 K1.I have been riding for a while. It has had a missing center stand. I came to replace it the other day and on closer inspection the brackets are bent and the frame bar which the bracket are on has two gashes in it that are about an inch or so wide roth at the base of the bracket. also the bar has been bent foward closer to the block. So my question is how badly does this effect the strength of the frame and is there anything i can do about it.
any help much aprecheated.

Nick,
It shouldn't affect the strength of the frame too much, but I would suggest you get it welded up just to be safe?
Jim.

Hi Nick,
I used to own a CB750K1 and the centre stand siezed on me, when I looked closer the centre stand pivot had rusted to the centre stand and had been turning in the frame clamps. The only way to remove the stand was to twist the frame clamps. Sounds like this has happened to your bike in the past. What I did was to have two blocks made which I bolted to the clamps and hung the centre stand from them, it did not look pretty but worked.
Would like to see a photo of the bar before passing any further comment.

Cheers

that does not look to good nick , i have heard that some of the earlier frames suffered from corrosion down there, anyone else heard similar? it will be repairable just depends how far you need to take it apart to get to it , mick.

I've seen cracks (not as bad as that) on other '70s/'80s tube framed bikes like this before, I was always told it was due to sitting on the bike while on the centre stand and \"Rocking it Off\" (ooohh err!!!) - the stand that is.

You would of thought that with the ammount of oil that ends up down there, corrosion would be the least of our worries.

Hi Nick,
That does not look good, if it was my bike I would take the engine out, clean up the frame check for more corrosion and get it welded up.

Thanks again for the Help. I have had a close examination of the frame. well the best i can and it does seem like the only corrosion is round the splits in the bar. I did also notice though the paint has been touched up a bit in places but i think i might be a looking in a bit of a paranoid way. I will definatly find some one good and get it welded up. does any one know anybody good wth theses problems in the Gloucester area.
thanks
Nick

Nick,
Possibly the most knowledgeable bloke on SOHC 4s in the country is based in Gloucester; his name is Bryan Jones, email is blj@blj.org.uk  I think?
Jim.
