Cementy grey stuff on inside of point covers etc
« on: November 02, 2015, 01:40:22 PM »
Had to remove the cementy grey stuff on the inside of some points covers prior to stripping the plating a week or so back. It comes off pretty easy if you immerse the cover in strong, hot caustic soda solution. I assume it's there to prevent 'ringing' of the thin metal plate when subjected to engine vibrations or possibly an insulator but I doubt it. Anyone know what it is? If not I could get it analysed to see what it consists of.

cheers ...Ash

Sounds like a damping medium to me too
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I found the same on the inside of mine as well Ash. It looked like someone had been using it as a mixing bowl for exhaust paste or something similar. I just soaked mine in Fairy and it came off quite easily. I have been told since then that it is something to stop arcing from the points, not sure if that's true or not but, would make sense I suppose.

I thought that too Julie but you get it on both covers on the 250K twins, not just the points one.

Cheers ... Ash

That's just what I thought when I saw mine - it looks like the sort of mess I make on bits of cardboard when I'm using body filler. I didn't think for a minute that it was OEM.
