Removing Chrome from alloy?

I need to remove some chrome from an alloy rocker cover,  have any of you done this, or know how to do this?

I did some research on this once, and decided it was cheaper and easier to either get it re-chromed or replaced.

I asked a chroming company about it and and they reckoned they couldn't guarantee destroying the price in the process. It was something to do with the amount of time the piece would spend in the acid bath to remove the chrome.
