Gear shaft oil seal leak
« on: February 07, 2016, 09:39:24 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have an oil leak coming from the gear change shaft seal. I read on this site that it can be changed without major work to the engine and done ?in situ, but it didn't explain how.

Has anyone changed these and do they have any tips?

Many thanks, Alan

You screw two wood screws in to the face of the seal and pull on the screws with pliers  ;)

And then can I just push a new seal in until it sits correctly?

I had mine leak a while back so I got a new seal from DS but then noticed it didn't appear to be leaking, left it as it was and it has never leaked since! go figure.

Clean all the secret additive (sh1t) from inside the case and cover the splines on the shaft so as not to damage the inside of the seal then just push it in square

Cheers Bryan and Trigger, I've ordered a seal from DS so hope to get this done by the weekend.

A cautionary tale about gear change shaft oil seals...

After rebuilding the 400 engine using all new seals from DS, I found it used to leak oil on the garage floor and over my left foot after riding .  I could never catch where it was leaking from so I pressurised the crankcase with compressed air.   At once, oil pissed out of the gearchange shaft oil seal.  The new part from DS had been in stock for decades and had gone hard,  and the sealing lip that contacts the shaft was split in a few places.
A new, rubbery,  seal bought locally for 3 quid sorted it.
I couldn't change the seal with the shaft in place so the clutch had to come out so I could withdraw the shaft.   Took me an hour or so to do so check any seals before fitting.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?
