First Honda subsidiary in UK, 1961, 1962 ?
« on: February 18, 2016, 11:07:53 AM »
Hello all,

I am studying Honda business establishment in Europe and found that they began in Germany, Belgium and France between 1959 and 1963.
It seems that they also opened a commercial office in England , a subsidiary of European Honda Motor Trading Gmbh in Hamburg (Germany), established 2, Manorgate Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.

Do you have information about this first Honda office in England ? I think it was in 1961 or 1962 but not sure ?

It seems also that they opened a subsidiary in Netherlands, probably at the same period, Honda Motor NV located Zenostraat 186, Rotterdam. Any information ?

Thanks in advance for your help  ;)
Patrick

So I understand that Honda bikes were first imported at the beginning of 1960 by Maico Ltd in London, who was the importer in UK for German Maico bikes and scooters. They founded a new company named Hondis Ltd in that aim.

They loose this agreement at the end of 1962 to the profit of European Honda Motor Trading Gmbh who opened an office and spare parts stock 2, Manorgate Road, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.

Do you know why Hondis Ltd informed their agents of this fact by a letter in which they speak of Honda motorcycles over 100cc, is that means that they kept the sale of Honda bikes under 100 cc ?

All information about that welcome !  ;)

I've known that road (manorgate) for years and often drive down there even now.

Never knew that association with honda though.

I suggest you get in touch with the person whose website it is that  I linked you too. You may also get more information from David Silver, as I pointed DS to that information and he acted on it and got more information for his forthcoming museum from the guy who's site that is. The guy who is fronting the DS museum Roger Etcell was also the boss at Honda UK and he may be able to help. This is his site:

BTW  the original link I posted has gone dead on me  :'( :'(

Cheers ... Ash

Many thanks Ash for these information  ;)

I'll contact Roger Etcell as he seems to be the right man for that purpose !

Steve's website is sometimes out of order but run well today ... I tried to contact by email but no answer at the moment.
