CB750 K4 Installing outer clutch drum
« on: February 22, 2016, 04:44:18 PM »
I'm sure this has been asked many times, but here goes. The clutch outer drum on the K4 requires pulling off with a hub puller. I managed that bit no problem, the question is how does it go back on? Have got it on with gentle mallet tapping but it wont go that last 7mm or so. Is there a cunning plan for doing this, as I don't like hammering against bearings ever.

Thought it might be the kickstarter gears, but they are definitely engaged.

Thanks yet again.

What about making a spacer and using the nut to wind it on. Would that work. Any ideas welcome. Cheers.

It looks lined up with the kickstart cog and can't see a 7mm gap at the rear of the basket, any further back and the cog to the basket will be touching . I just turn the engine a few rotations and push the basket in. Am I missing some thing after a hard day at the office ?

Shouldn't the end of splines on the drum line up with the end of the splines on the shaft? Both the shaft and the drum measure 20mm so would have thought so.

Looked at all 3 of the major manuals and they all describe pulling the drum off the shaft with a hub puller, then go on to just say re-fit the drum. Not very helpful really as what needs to be hub pullered off does not push back on by hand (unless your a candidate for Worlds Strongest Man).

Trigger. I don't think the photo I posted gives a good impression of the space behind the drum. Although the cogs are engaged, they don't seem to be fully home. The thing wont budge at all from this position and I really don't want to start hammering against the bearings.

Will post a better picture later today. Any and all ideas most welcome.

Cheers All.

Here is what one should look like, I have taken the pictures with the basket fully home on the shaft out of the case. Hope this helps, can push it on and off with a bit of force by hand ;D.

Your picture looks like it needs a little tap with a copper hammer ;)

Thanks Trig, I expected the basket to go right back to the bearing and that shows it, must be the kick-start gear holding it off. It is very tight going on the splines though. Going to have another go now. Cheers.

Thanks Trigger sorted it now.

It was the kickstart cog holding it off. Had to pull the shaft to the left to allow it to engage as it's a bit floppy until the outer casing is on and it was trapping behind the cage. Once I did that it tapped on with the mallet okay.

Another learning curve out of the way.

Cheers.

Don't be so modest our Roy........I'm very grateful for all your help......and not only for your many mechanical skills, but also your slant on life and other stuff.

Despite our 'setbacks' on this project I would have no hesitation in doing it again...........easy for me to say I admit, but it's like Chris Tarrant says on Millionaire.......'It's only easy when you know the answers'.

Giving new life to a 40 year old motor is always fraught with obstacles, and it's a credit to your tenacity and a great advert for the support of members of the sohc Forum that we are nearly there.

Cheers Alan.

I do actually enjoy doing this stuff despite sounding suicidal sometimes. I think that may be just the way I write more than anything else. The snapped cylinder stud  p****d me off somewhat though.

I also will have no hesitation in doing it again, even though this one has been tough. We've had many seized bolts and screws, smashed crankcase from a chain break, snapped studs etc etc. Have learned a load in the process though mainly thanks to the great support on this forum.

It will be ready for you to put back in your repainted frame shortly, just waiting for parts yet again. ;D

Cheers.
