Tappet setting / alignment 750 F2
« on: March 09, 2016, 11:36:36 AM »
Hi All,
I've just finished the top end rebuild of my 750 F2 engine.
When doing the final adjustment of the tappets i noticed that the adjuster screw is at an angle to the valve stem and creating a wedged gap with the pinch point towards the centre of the engine.
Is this correct or have I fitted something wrong?
It appears to be on all of the valves.
There is no sign of the valve tops being ground to remove mushrooming, all appear to be in good condition.

They all do that.

When the valve is fully open the tappet will be square on to the valve and pushing straight down. This is because the rocker moves in an arc, around its shaft, where the valve has to move in a straight line. If the gap were parallel to the tappet at rest when the valve is shut, the 'wedge' would occur during the opening, causing uneven wear and possibly upsetting the valve timing.

Thanks for that.
Might have seemed a daft question but thought it best to check.
Last thing i wanted to do was to button it up, put it back in the frame and then find I'd missed something meaning i had to rip it all out again. :)

This arrangement is also ensures slight rotation of the valves each time their operated, keeping sealing surfaces clean and tight.

It is slightly more of a wedge on. The F2 as the angle of the valves is more than others to enable the larger valves to go in combustion chamber. The F2 will tend to "dome" the top of the valve more than others  as the tappet screw will dig its way down the valve.as long as the oil is changed regularly and the tappets are regularly checked. Better still get bronze guides and APE stainless valves,
