Miles per tank? CB500 k1
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:39:29 PM »
Hi all,

Now my bike is registered and insured I've started riding it around, but what kind of mileage do you get from a full tank of fuel? And how much mileage can you do before switching over to the reserve?

I generally get about 106 miles before reserve,

I guess 10 miles per litre,

for safety I seldom exceed 125 miles between fill ups,

one bennefit is it gives you chance to stretch your legs, and cure the dreaded "numb bum" syndrome

About the same on mine, even tugging a chair, but occasionally it could drop as low as 90 miles per tank, but normally about 120 miles per tank. I'm quite surprised how little inpact a sidecar appears to have based on what John says he's getting. I got more miles per tank out of my k3, but it wasn't as reliable in the fueling department if left stood.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

I would say it depends upon how hard you ride it.  I know on occasions where I have been thrashing it on twisty roads with lots of going up and down the gearbox the fuel consumption goes down radically but then mine has bigger jets, less restrictive air filter and straight through exhaust pipe.

I think it is reasonable to expect around about 50 MPG.

Mine is around 120 miles (safe) to a tank. I normally ride on open roads, change up at some 6000 rpm and cruise at around 5000 rpm.

Thanks everyone. It's been a while since i rode a bike without a fuel gauge, let alone a manual reserve tank switch!!

I was about to ask about the remaining "flight-time" on reserve with a 500 four...
On that "Stratocruiser" of an ST1100 I'm on about 1 hour/~100km/~60miles remaining once that pesky fuel reserve lights up...
Seems having to flick the fuel valve on the CB means to search for a water-hole like NOW!?

I just went for a ride out, almost exactly 10 miles per litre,

as far a reserve in concerned, its about 4 litres,so ride carefully for up to 40miles plus .

and for the first time I used satelite tracking app,Realrider,to cover the ride,

Round by me the nearest petrol station is 17 miles on twisty hilly lanes - If I need to switch to reserve within 5 miles of the filling station on the way home, then it's a case of turn back or use a fuel can, Or chance it that you'll run out of juice before you get the chance to fill up. A nasty headwind or getting stuck behind a slow driver can ruin your day if you chance it, more so if you forget to turn the tap off overnight, I think every bike I have had has been a bit incontinent if left overnight with the fuel tap on.

to be completely honest I cannot notice any difference in performance between leaded and unleaded on these bikes.

I was astonished to learn from this thread that some bikes now have fuel gauges.  I don't see the point, the tank is right there and you just have to look inside.
